DIY Wedding Makeup Tips
Okay Ladies, I get it… bargain hunting is in my blood and there are many things that I just refuse to spend a lot of money on simply based on principal. Actually, it really annoys my husband.
However, I have also learned the hard way and now know when you don’t skimp on something. You know that old saying “You get what you pay for”, well don’t say you were not warned.
That being said if your desire is to do your own wedding makeup I am here to say, IT CAN BE DONE. Just know what you are getting into before you get into it. I have always been very particular about my makeup, even before I got an education in the artistry of makeup and I actually think because of my pickiness and my determination of seeking some level of perfection I would have gotten through it quite fine for a small family wedding but I still have my doubts about how pictures would have turned out.
I will try to keep this as simple as possible. Why do you think celebrities get their makeup done for each red-carpet event that they do? Easy, because they are going to be photographed and those photographs will show up any and everywhere and they know they do not want wack pictures of themselves out there for the world to see. So, you get my point, your wedding day will be the single most photographed day of your life. Is that a risk that is worth taking?
Lets get down to it. What you need to do the day of your wedding to ensure your makeup will look its best and will last all through the night.
Make sure you have great lighting. A trained Makeup Artist invests a pretty penny into lighting because they need to know how you will look in the sun, in photographs, etc. Which means you should do the same. If you are able to do your makeup in beaming sunlight, great. That definitely helps but if not you will need to update your bulbs and possibly buy some extra lighting.
Prep your skin! Obviously, hydration is vital for glowing skin but do you know what products work best with your skin type? Seeing an esthetician a few months ahead of time would be ideal to start working on your overall skin health. The day, cleanse and use a hydrating spray. Before your makeup application you should apply a primer that you have tested and tried. Be careful with using your everyday moisturizers with SPF because the SPF in the product can have a flashback effect in your photography and make you appear paler where the moisturizer was applied.
Foundation/Airbrush Foundation. LONG LASTING is what you need in this department! Being a bridal makeup artist in the southeast, I have had my work cut out for me because of the heat and humidity so your weather conditions and venue may determine what type of products you need to use. My preference has always been airbrush makeup (because of how it up holds in the heat) but if you go that route make sure you use a foundation that is silicone or water based opposed to alcohol based and be sure to do lots of practicing.
Blending & Brushes. If I had to pick one thing that separates a makeup artist from another makeup artist or even just an average woman…it would be the brushes they used and their blending techniques. It is practically impossible for me to blog about what brushes and blending techniques would work best because I would need to know your desired look but I will say that this is where you need to spend the most time. Practice makes perfect and make sure you don’t skimp on brushes.
Lashes. I have worked with many brides that initially did not think lashes would be something that they needed but don’t count them out! These days there are different types of lashes and many look very natural. In my professional opinion false lashes are the one thing someone can do to look special without having to add a ton of makeup. Not to mention they will look amazing in pictures.
Setting Spray and/or Powder. If you tend to have oily skin, setting your makeup with a translucent powder is a good idea and after all that work, make sure you get a good setting spray to help ensure your makeup lasts all night long.
The mountain may look tall but I can assure you, you can get there. It will take time to do all the research you will need to do but if you are truly dedicated, it can be done. However, if this all sounds like too much…well no worries just hire a qualified professional and spend your special day relaxing like a princess.
